LO4 Evaluation Criteria

A) Production Process
There were 3 stages to our Sheffield Live segment, Pre production, production and post production. For the pre production, we had to plan our event and the shots we were going to get on the game night as well as the separate shooting day to film the animals and the rest of the centre. We had to take a lot of time making an assortment of planning documentation. We made call sheets to obtain equipment from college. We had to make gant charts and production schedules to make sure we had a timetable of events and jobs to make sure we were on schedule. We made storyboards so that we had a plan of which shots we need and how they would be shot, so that we had a brief outline of what would be shot. We made treatments and various other documents that would make it clear what we were doing and what it was for, which benefits us as well as people involved in other aspects of the project.

The production process was capturing the footage and making sure it was all recorded well. This would then be edited once we felt that we had enough good, high quality footage. We all had a chance to operate the camera at some point. We used a Canon 650D to capture the footage which we had discussed previously as it would be a versatile enough piece of hardware to record the footage of still, moving shots and interviews. We used a Rode Shotgun microphone which we mounted on the cameras for the interviews. We had 2 separate days to film, one of them was the game night, which had to be done perfectly in the one night as the people we interviewed had no planned answers to the questions, so we had to capture their responses live so there was no room for error. The second day we had more room for error as the Gentleman who showed us round knew we were coming for a tour so we had more time for more takes. Yet we still needed to do the filming to as high a standard as possible in a small time frame.

The Post Production was our last stage, which involved editing the footage we had as well as taking criticism from our classmates, Sheffield Live and our 2 presenters. The criticism allowed us to take on board advice on what to change as well as know what bits were done well. Editing was a difficult stage as it took a huge amount of time, around 3-4 weeks, so this was very time consuming. We had to go over both sets of footage and decide on where to put them in the show, this was difficult as there was no specific chronology to the final piece, so we had to combine the clips in a way that had a story to it, as the footage alone did not. So we had to decide how best to edit the clips so the audience would be entertained as well as understand what was happening. We used Adobe Premiere to edit the footage, and once the order of the clips were decided and cut down, the actual music and transitions took little time to do. The music we used was taken from the site www.audionetwork.lgfl.org.uk as the music is royalty free so copyright will not be affected. After we exported the product, we got feedback from other members of the group, which was mostly positive, however we had to go back and change the size of one of the clips and slightly alter the sound level of one of the pieces of music, so it fitted better with the clips. The footage quality however was heavily praised as it looked sharp and clear.

B) Key Decisions
The location was set by our 2 presenters who also organise the show, as they were planning on going to the event to raise awareness of it for people in the local area. It was shot at the RSPCA centre in Attercliffe, Sheffield, as the games were played in their multi-function room. On both occasions we took the tram as it was the quickest way to get there from the centre of Sheffield. We took 2 cameras, a tripod and a Rode Shotgun microphone for the first set of footage, and only one camera, a microphone and a tripod the second time. We followed interview conventions by having a close up of the person we were interviewing and tried to get most of their upper body and head in the shot, which we felt we did successfully. On one of the two shots of the presenters, a convention in magazine shows, unfortunately we cut off the top of the head of one presenter in a shot. We chose upbeat, happy and calm music for the product, as we felt it connotes the calm and friendly atmosphere at the centre, so our choices reflected this. We decided that we would overlay the interviews with a variety of tour footage of the centre. We thought this would be more entertaining for the audience than just watching an interview. It also allowed us to use up the footage of the animals that had minimal sound in them.

C) The interviews were as they were in the storyboard as we thought there would only be one conventional way to do these. The establishing shot that we did was not too similar to the one we planned, as we never got a good enough steady shot of the building, as we planned to use a tripod, however we didn't which was a regret as our establishing shot could be better. Another change from the storyboard was the shots of the animals, as it was difficult to get the shots of them that we wanted because they were either running around or in their enclosures. The shots with the animals in the enclosures were also difficult to prepare for as we had little idea about what they would look like, so a number of them were improvised when we got inside the building. However the shots that we planned for were alike the storyboard more often than not. The interview replies from the person we were talking too were also not scripted as we did not know what answers the person was going to give, so some of the questions we asked had to be relevant to their answer to the last one, but we knew this would happen, so we needed an array of questions to ask.

D) The feedback from the visual aspect of the footage was mostly positive from our classmates and the presenter as they said how the footage quality is good. Unfortunately, some shots that required a still hand were not as good as they could have been, as we should have utilised the tripod more often, however it was sometimes not possible with the movement of the camera when walking. The sound on the clips was sometimes a little muffled, however, it was not in the interviews, which was a main part of the sound in our product, so this was not to worry about as we silenced the clips and used them as an overlay for the interview, so it was countered. The framing for the interviews was extremely good and looked professional, unfortunately one of the two shots was poorly framed and a section of one of the presenters was cropped out.

E) Our final product matched the storyboard well and we feel we have succeeded in creating a piece fit for television to entertain our audience, as well as helping to get awareness of the event. We got all the shots we wanted as well as enough to last our 5 minute segment. We had no planned script for the interviews as we didn't know who we would be interviewing or what their responses to the questions would be, however we did storyboard an interview with the head of the centre and someone at the event, which we managed to get. We planned to get a good insight into the centre, which, from our footage and interviews we did well, as well as planning to display the night and the facilities they have for them, which again we did successfully.

F) Our product was suited to our target audience as it not only shows games being played, but also shows the audience an event they may want to attend where they can play games in a competitive and social environment. We used shots of game footage, shots of people playing games, interviews about the night and the centre, as well as footage from around the centre itself. Gamers should find the social aspect highly appealing as it is becoming much more common to play games in groups, as there are many gaming bars open now. They may also be interested in visiting the centre which helps to give it some more publicity. Our segment will be good for pre watershed due to there being no offensive or harmful content. It would be educational as well as entertaining so it would be good for daytime television.

G) Some of the framing in a couple of shots could have been better, however the ones that we did frame well looked very professional. We should focus on making sure all shots are framed well next time. We should also make sure we use tripods more frequently as some establishing shots and panning shots were a little shaky, so a tripod will eliminate this. The establishing shot could have much better as we only did 2 takes for it and both were shaky so we had to use only a tiny section, which meant it wasn't as long as we wanted. The interviews were very strong, the sound was clear and the shots look professional, the only way for us to get the sound better is to use a microphone to attach to the person we are interviewing to minimize the hiss.
